Every year at our annual meeting, the Heritage League of Pierce County recognizes the outstanding heritage work carried out in our county by museum and community professionals.
The goal of these awards is to recognize achievement among our members and affiliates doing heritage work in Pierce County.

Karen Haas presents the 2014 HLPC Lifetime Achievement Award to Joan Curtis
2021
-Capital and Building Award was presented to Points NE Historical Society for their work in renovating the lighthouse.
-The Collections and Archives Award was presented to the Job Carr Cabin Museum for their work with guest curator Brendan Balaam to assess, catalogue, and exhibit a collection of Carr family archival materials.
-The Exhibitions Award was presented to the DuPont Historical Society for their work in establishing a Buffalo Soldiers exhibit, based on the 1904 military maneuvers and Sequalitchew Creek encampment, and providing visual and tactile history accessible to children and adults.
- The Education Award was presented to Fort Nisqually for their exceptional work with the The Fort from Home: Puget Sound Treaty War Panel discussion series. Their work increased representation of Native voices in the telling of 19th Century history.
-The Special Audiences Award was presented to the Buffalo Soldiers Museum for their innovative work in presenting the Fort Lawton Legacy, Legends and History Jazz experience.
- The Collaboration Award was presented to Historic Tacoma for their exceptional work in collaboration with Forterra NW and the Tacoma City Association of Colored Women’s Clubs in helping preserve the legacy and history of the Henry J. and Nettie Craig Asberry Home.
-The Special Programs Award was presented to the Foss Waterway Seaport for their innovative work in developing engaging and exciting programs like the Salmon project, 3rd Thursday Virtual Tours, The Live Dive Exhibit, and Brainy Briny, all of which helped to connect virtually with those at home and brought educational programming to guests and students alike.
2020
-The Special Projects Award was presented to the Washington State Historical Society for their work on the Unlocking McNeil’s Past: The Prison, the Place, the People exhibit and podcast.
-The Collaboration Award was presented to the Grave Concerns Association for their work with Premier Memorial to restore and enhance the historic Western State Hospital Cemetery.
-The Emerging Professionals Award was presented to Holly O’Brien for her work with Meeker Mansion.
-The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dale Wirsing for his work with multiple Pierce County heritage organizations as reporter, professor, author, speaker, board member and volunteer.
2019
-The Events Award was presented to the Puyallup Historical Society at Meeker Mansion for reimagining two public events during the pandemic: Drive Thru Oregon Trail and Cider Squeeze and Drive Thru Light Up the Mansion events
The Special Projects Award was presented to the Anderson Island Historical Society for creating the Johnson Farm Story film.
-Collaborations Award presented to the Tacoma Historical Society for partnering with the Chinese Reconciliation Park Foundation and Historic Tacoma for producing two new mobile walking tours.
-The Research Award was presented to Larae Liddle for her genealogical research supporting Grace Concerns Association, McNeil Island Historical Society and Fort Steilacoom Historical Settlers Cemetery.
-The Community Impact Award was presented to Valerie Siverston for her 33 years of service at Pioneer Farm Museum and Ohop Indian Village
-The Lifetime Achievement award was presented to Andy Anderson for his 30 years of service on the Board of Directors for the Puyallup Historical Society at Meeker Mansion.
2018
Lifetime Achievement Award was presented posthumously to Bob Minnich for his work with the Puyallup Historical Society at Meeker Mansion.

Other awards presented at the 2018 annual meeting were:
Publications Award to Winona Jacobsen for her work in support of the Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society, including researching and writing a book detailing the history of Bonney Lake.
Event Award to the Tacoma Historical Society for hosting the 11th Annual Destiny Dinner, celebrating Tacoma’s social justice champions.
Special Projects/Collaborations Award to the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation and the City of Tacoma Historic Preservation Office for bringing the Youth Heritage Project to Tacoma, engaging teens in hands‐on learning about local maritime heritage.
Promotion/Marketing Award to Phillip Raschke for his efforts on behalf of the Buffalo Soldiers Museum. He brings Pierce County history to a wide audience through his radio program, lectures and historical films.
Organizational Achievement Award to Mary Bowlby for her advocacy and determination to expand the Job Carr Cabin Museum’s presence in the community.
Individual Achievement Awrd to Melissa McGinnis for her long‐standing efforts to support local history in her work at MetroParks Tacoma.
2017
Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Carol and Orville Stout for their work with Historic Fort Steilacoom.

Publication Award to Jerry Ramsey for Stealing Puget Sound on the history of native, English, American and Hudson Bay Company land-claims.
Education Award to the Jan Adams and the Foss Maritime Seaport for a project involving reconstruction of a whale skeleton by Stadium High school Students at the Seaport.
Special Project Award to Deb Freeman for her book and exhibit project that shed light on Tacoma’s Jewish community.
Individual Achievement Award to Nancy Keller-Scholz for her work on the Middle School Daycamp at Fort Nisqually.
